Needs

The prevalence of disability in Florida is estimated to be around 3.2 million, 22.2% of the population.   An approximate 22.8% of Miami-Dade County aged 5 or older lives with a disability.  Low-income individuals living with either an intellectual and/or developmental disability often forgo accessing necessary services including legal representation.

The mission of the FIU Embrace Law Project will be to promote the self-determination and independence of low-income adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing direct legal services that protect individual autonomy and access to services.

Description of Activities

FIU Embrace Law is a project of the FIU Law Community Lawyering Clinic. The project will operate as a pro bono law firm representing low-income individuals identified and referred by the FIU Embrace initiative in a variety of civil legal matters, and is a delivery model designated to improve legal client/patient outcomes by addressing social determinants of health (poverty, education and employment, income, housing, legal status, personal and family stability, etc.).

The involvement of varied community partners is critical for FIU Embrace Law’s success.   Therefore community education and training will also be central components to this project.  FIU Embrace Law will provide community outreach through workshops, events, and community training to education and encourage these adults, their families, service providers (doctors, nurses, social workers, other health care staff, and community-at-large) regarding issues impacting people with disabilities.

The FIU Law Community Lawyering Clinic is a legal services delivery model designated to improve legal client/patient outcomes by addressing social determinants of health (poverty, education and employment, income, housing, legal status, personal and family stability, etc.)
