The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (CoM) in collaboration with FIU Embrace, provides a comprehensive, integrated care model FIU Embrace – Medical. FIU Embrace is a university-wide initiative that promotes health, wellness, and overall functioning for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities (ID), and other neurodevelopmental disorders (OND).

FIU Embrace – Medical’s services includes primary care, gynecology, behavioral health services such as psychiatric care, as well as laboratory and other ancillary services to adults with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Our care philosophy is patient-focused, and recognizes that people with developmental disabilities deserve to be valued and treated as individuals with personal strengths and talents.

Under the leadership of our medical director, Dr. Mavara Mirza-Agrawal, the faculty and treatment team brings years of expertise in understanding and treating the specific needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Together, FIU Embrace and the CoM seek to help persons with ASD, ID, and OND lead healthy lives and maximize their individual potential across their lifespan – embracing differences, nurturing talents.

Primary Care

Laboratory Tests

Our services are provided on the 2nd and 4th Mondays and the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, available from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. During office visits, all patient care and laboratory services are provided in the same examination room, minimizing the number of changes and transitions to ensure a more positive patient experience and improved health outcomes.

They cater to the autistic adult so they know what to expect. [They] know how to speak to them. It’s one of the nicer things because when you get to places, people don’t understand that he is autistic since it is not something you can physically see. So when people try to engage with him, and he does not engage [back], people take it as he’s rude. EMBRACE understands that as he is going in and immediately they make him comfortable. Then they are better able to help him because, in turn, he opens up and will speak with them.”

Father of Adult with Autism

This program in and of itself has saved us money, simply because we have one doctor’s visit, now down to every other month, instead of dragging her to the various doctors she’d need to go to that don’t follow ‘autism time’.”
